Compass of Serbia is a project of the Institute of Social Sciences aimed at establishing infrastructure for systematic and continuous empirical research in social sciences. It will cover key aspects of life and social change in Serbia, providing a detailed insight into long-term trends and their impact on citizens’ everyday lives. Through continuous monitoring, the project will encompass topics such as family, education, work, media, civic participation in decision-making, and more.
This research panel enables the implementation of both one-time and repeated studies on citizens’ individual attitudes, including an analysis of their stability and changes over time. Additionally, Compass of Serbia will significantly expand opportunities for researchers to participate in international projects, which were previously limited. With this panel, the Institute of Social Sciences will join a prestigious group of leading international research institutions that are already developing similar research infrastructures.
A particular attention is given to applying high methodological standards and improving practices in longitudinal research. Tracking attitude changes over time presents specific challenges that go beyond those in cross-sectional surveys, which is why we continuously work on refining data collection methods and techniques.
The sample consists of respondents who have agreed to participate periodically in public opinion research. It was designed by the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia (RZS), applying the principles of random selection and using data from the 2022 Population Census (household address catalog). Such a probability-based sample allows for empirically grounded generalizations regarding the population it represents—adult citizens of Serbia. Sampling based on probability theory ensures the accuracy of estimates and provides methodological validity to the research results.
The Compass of Serbia is being implemented with the support of the SAIGE Project (Serbia Accelerating Innovation and Growth Entrepreneurship).
