Roundtable: The Current Social Crisis Through the Lens of Public Opinion

Presentation of research results by the Institute of Social Sciences “Student and Civic Protests in Serbia – Motives, Causes, and Goals” and discussion.

The Institute of Social Sciences invites you on June 17 at 12:00 PM to an open and transparent conversation about the ongoing social crisis, current civic and student protests, potential solutions, as well as the causes, motives, and goals recognized by public opinion in the wave of protests and blockades initiated by the collapse of the canopy at the railway station in Novi Sad.

The research by the Institute of Social Sciences was launched to provide a comprehensive analysis of the current student and civic protests in Serbia as a significant social phenomenon. The aim of this research was to identify the deeper social, economic, and political causes, motives, and goals of the protests, as well as the political and ideological profiling of their supporters and opponents. Such an approach enables understanding of the causes and consequences of the protests and opens possibilities for defining sustainable social solutions.

The research offers an in-depth insight into the causes, motives, and goals of the current protests in Serbia, viewing them as a reflection of broader social and institutional problems. A particular value of the study lies in its parallel analysis of the views of both supporters and opponents of the protests, allowing for a better understanding of social divisions and potential solutions. The results point to widespread distrust in institutions and political actors, but also reveal a willingness for change. These findings can serve decision-makers, the media, and the civil sector as a foundation for improving public dialogue and creating sustainable social solutions.
