Panel discussion “Three decades of transition in Serbia – sociological and anthropological perspective”, held on June 1, 2022, at the Institute of Social Sciences, was organized by the Center for Sociological and Anthropological Research. The conference was organized on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the Institute of Social Sciences.
The participants were researchers from the Institute of Social Sciences, University of Belgrade -Faculty of Philosophy, Institute of Ethnography SASA, Institute of Archeology, and the Institute for Recent History of Serbia.
The theme of the conference was social transition in Serbia over the past three decades. In three interdisciplinary sessions, participants discussed the sociological and anthropological aspects of the transition process. The first session aimed to discuss theoretical issues and concepts in research on transition. The second session was dedicated to issues of identity, norms and values through the following topics: general trust in Serbian society, globality and locality of identity, the transition to adulthood over the life course, the culture of memory through representations in public space. The third session dealt with the relations between identities and institutions, focusing on political participation of women, queer identities, academic culture, academic mobility, and history of research institutes.
The participants raised some relevant issues on ongoing changes in Serbia: the relationship between agency and determinism, hybrid modernization and transitional institutions, self-reflexivity of scientific research, and the role of institutional change in identity transformations. This panel discussion will encourage future interdisciplinary collaboration through other modalities of research and dissemination.
