On the occasion of the recent passing of influential American political scientist and international relations theorist Joseph S. Nye Jr., a roundtable titled “Joseph Nye and His Scholarly Legacy” will be held in the Great Hall of the Institute of Social Sciences. Through the development of the concept of soft power, Professor Nye shaped the modern understanding of global power, influence, and diplomacy, thus making a lasting contribution to the field of international relations.
The aim of this roundtable is not only to pay scholarly tribute to Joseph Nye, but also to encourage critical analysis and discussion of the application, challenges, and transformations of the concept of soft power in the contemporary international context. The event will be organized into three panels. The first panel, titled “Joseph Nye: Between Soft Power and Hard Realities” will be dedicated to a theoretical and historical overview of Nye’s work. The second panel will focus on Nye’s insights into global politics, while the third panel, “Soft Power in Global and Regional Practice” will explore contemporary applications of the soft power concept, with particular attention to the Balkans, the United States, China, Russia, and Turkey.
