Strengthening the infrastructure for fundamental research was the main topic of discussion at the gathering “The Importance and Challenges of Establishing the Infrastructure for the Development of Fundamental Research in the Social Sciences in Serbia” which was held 5-7 May in Sremska Kamenica.
The gathering organized by the ISS was participated in by representatives of the Ministry of Science, Technological Development and Innovations, Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia, as well as the directors of the SAIGE Project and deans of the faculties of philosophy in Novi Sad and Belgrade.
The first segment of the gathering focused on the importance of returning to empirical research. What was especially emphasized was the role of developing methodology and revitalization of infrastructure, together with utilizing “scientific memory” from the institute’s history.
Another important segment involved integration into European infrastructural networks. The ISS researchers highlighted the importance of integration into European infrastructural networks such as SHARE and Gender and Generation, with the emphasis on supporting technological development, innovations and public policy planning.
Additionally covered were the fields such as the importance and challenges of research infrastructures in social sciences, specific characteristics of the needs of social sciences in Serbia, experiences in organizing empirical research in other scientific systems, as well as the importance of the European Scientific Survey (ESS).
What was especially emphasized was the importance of open science and accessibility of data, as well as the ISS work on building a representative national internet-panel.
Among the conclusions from the gathering, the importance of the ISS efforts in revitalizing empirical research in Serbia was highlighted.
