Current research projects

– Providing advisory and support to the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia to improve data collection and assessment in line with the activities defined by the Serbian economic migration policy and employment policy, and to develop a roadmap for conducting research on international migration.

– Elaboration of a demographic development strategy until 2040 as part of the study for the Spatial Plan of the Republic of North Macedonia.

Vladimir Nikitović received his PhD in demography from the Faculty of Economics – University of Belgrade (2009) after earning a MSc in demography and a BSc in geography from the Faculty of Geography – University of Belgrade. His research interest is oriented towards projections of population dynamics, fertility, migration, population policy, and spatial aspects of demographic phenomena.

Nikitović started his research career in 1999 at the Geographic Institute “Jovan Cvijić” of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, before moving to the Institute of Social Sciences in 2005. Since 2011, he has been the editor-in-chief of Stanovništvo – one of the world oldest demographic journals. He is a visiting lecturer at the Faculty of Economics – University of Belgrade and was at the Belgrade Open School until 2012.

His publications, which include numerous papers, as well as six monographs in the field of demography, have been cited in top-grade international journals and books of leading world publishers. Nikitović had been engaged as a manager, national consultant, thematic expert and mentor in 15 national and 7 international projects supported by the European Commission, UNDP, UNFPA, International Committee of the Red Cross, International Organization for Migration and German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ).

Nikitović has been contributing to creating national strategies and policy papers in the field of demography and spatial development since 2009. He was instructor in the Serbian Ministry of demography and population policy on topics of migration and demographic perspectives, and evaluator of bilateral scientific, and technological cooperation projects supported by the Serbian Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development. Since 2003, Nikitović has been very active in the public of Serbia and the wider region, through debates, authored texts and interviews in the leading media, with the aim of raising awareness of the contemporary role of the population factor in the development of society.

He is a member of the Committee for the Study of Population of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
