Vladimir Goati (1939–2025)

Vladimir Goati passed away in Belgrade on Wednesday, July 16. He was born in Mostar in 1939 and earned his doctorate from the Faculty of Political Sciences in Belgrade in 1973.

He served as the Director of the Center for Political Studies and Public Opinion at the Institute of Social Sciences from 1976 to 1983, and as the President of the Institute’s Scientific Council from 1990 to 2003.

Goati lectured at universities in Ljubljana, Bordeaux, Podgorica, and Belgrade. He was also a member of the Council for the Fight Against Corruption. He was the founder and long-time president of the non-governmental organization Transparency Serbia, the national branch of the global network Transparency International.

He authored numerous books, studies, and scientific articles, including (in Serbian) Elections in Serbia and Montenegro from 1990 to 2013 and in FRY from 1992 to 2003, Political Parties and Party Systems, Party Struggles in Serbia in the Post-October Period, Electoral Competitions in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia from 2000 to 2003, Parties of Serbia and Montenegro in Political Struggles from 1990 to 2000, and Yugoslavia at a Turning Point: From Monism to Civil War.

In addition to his academic and public engagement, Goati was a member of several domestic and international commissions, including those involved in electoral legislation reform.
