The Position of Young Researchers in the Social Sciences in Serbia

An initiative was launched within the Institute of Social Sciences regarding the importance of determining the elements that are significant for improving the position of young people in science.

In this context, young researchers organized a roundtable focused on the socio-economic status of young researchers in the field of social sciences.

The position of young researchers in the social sciences in Serbia can be described as challenging, given the insufficient regulation of their socio-economic status. This is even more so because there is no normative definition of the term “young in science,” nor is there a definition of qualification criteria in the current regulations. Additionally, issues related to working conditions, such as the form of employment, rights to leave, as well as rights to professional development and career advancement, including international mobility, remain unregulated, which makes the position of young researchers particularly vulnerable.

What public policy measures should be implemented to reduce the identified “vulnerability,” achieve certain certainty, and ensure the security of the position of young people engaged in the science sector in Serbia? This was the focus of the scientific conference held on December 21, 2018, in the main hall of the Institute of Social Sciences, where, among others, State Secretaries Vladimir Popović and Viktor Nedović participated.
