As part of the series of lectures “New views, perspectives and research on gender theory”, the Study Research Group for Gender Equality and Public Policy of the Institute of Social Sciences in Belgrade, Margareta Basaragin, gave a lecture on “The Interaction of Gender and Language in Classroom Talk – A Contribution to Empirical Researches on Teacher-Pupils Exchanges” on April 4, 2023.
The aim of the presentation was to emphasize the elements of verbal behaviour of male and female pupils and teacher on the example of discourse strategies that contribute to the diverse construction of pupils’ gender identities during classroom talk.
The insufficient number of domestic empirical researches on classroom talk and on the use of language in educational institutions, encouraged Margareta Basaragin to analyze the corpus of empirical data consisting of detailed transcripts of school lessons.
The lecturer stressed the differences in the language behaviour of pupils directed to each other and to the teacher during the lesson. These data confirmed the construction of various elements of pupils’ gender identities and gender-marked classroom discourse. Dr. Basaragin gave recommendations for changing the current situation intended for teachers, researchers, educational institutions and everyone involved in curriculum planning and teaching.
