„News Agencies and Agency Journalism: Significance, Specificities, and the Paradox of Ignorance“

It is honor to invite you to attend a lecture of our colleague dr Slobodan Penezić as part of the cycle of lectures by new researchers at the Institute of Social Sciences.

Although news agencies and agency journalism play a central role in the global media system and have a significant impact on journalism as a whole, this segment of the media industry remains surprisingly under-researched and often marginalized – both in public discourse and in academic literature. The paradox of ignoring their role is particularly striking in light of the historical significance and current functions of agency journalism in shaping the global information structure. The specificities of agency journalism and the technological adaptability of agency journalism have contributed to their enduring relevance, from the industrial age to today’s digital transformation. They, therefore, represent a kind of mirror of broader civilizational changes in communication and information and remain irreplaceable actors in the processes of collecting, processing and distributing information at the global, national, and local levels. The lecture will present the basics of the historical development and typology of news agencies, the key characteristics of agency journalism as a model of news production, examples of the most influential global agencies, as well as contemporary challenges and transformations of their work. Special attention will be paid to the paradox of neglecting their role, despite its undoubted importance.

The aim of this lectures is promoting new researchers and familiarization with their previous work.
