A commemoration for the passing of Dr. Vladimir Goati

A commemoration for the passing of Dr. Vladimir Goati, a long-time associate, director, president of the scientific council of the Institute of Social Sciences, and head of the Centre for Political Research and Public Opinion, was held on July 18th at 11 AM in the grand hall of the Institute of Social Sciences.

Speaking at the commemoration were his colleagues and friends from the Institute of Social Sciences, the Faculty of Political Sciences in Belgrade, and Transparency Serbia.

Dr. Zoran Lutovac, deputy director, apologized on behalf of Director Goran Bašić, who could not be present. He thanked colleagues, friends, journalists, and admirers of Vladimir Goati’s work for attending the commemoration and gave the floor to guests who spoke about Goati on behalf of their institutions and in their personal capacities.

Nemanja Nenadić from Transparency Serbia spoke about Vladimir Goati’s cooperation and dedication to the fight against corruption, especially within the system and practices of political parties.

Dr. Danilo Šuković collaborated with Goati for many years at the Institute of Social Sciences in organizing scientific conferences and editing proceedings for the Centre for Economic Research, as well as in the Council for the Fight Against Corruption. In a very emotional address, Šuković recalled how conscientious a colleague Goati was, always ready to help younger colleagues.

Prof. Dr. Miloš Bešić remembered Vlada Goati as a political scientist whose works on political parties and the political system were an inspiration and direct help to everyone who dealt with these topics at the Faculty of Political Sciences, both professors and students.

At the commemorative gathering, a letter from Goati’s friend and colleague, Srđan Darmanović, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro and Ambassador to Washington, and a colleague from the Faculty of Political Sciences in Podgorica, was also read. The key messages in the letter were that Goati was a scientist of international caliber, a good man, and a friend.

Zoran Lutovac spoke about Vladimir Goati as a colleague and senior associate who, on one hand, was very dedicated to his work, and on the other, showed the human and humorous side of a senior colleague who ingrained in everyone’s memory the saying “publish or perish,” warning that obligations come first and that everything done theoretically or empirically should be published for generations to come.

Finally, Lutovac expressed hope that the next gathering dedicated to Vladimir Goati would be organized as a scientific conference dedicated to his scientific legacy.
