International Conference “Religion and Capitalism in a Global Society: Values, Identities, and Politics”

In an era of dynamic changes reshaping our daily lives, the intersection of religion and capitalism has emerged as one of the defining issues of our time. While capitalism dictates the directions of economic development, religion continues to strongly shape moral values and collective identities. These complex processes will be the focus of the upcoming international conference titled “Religion and Capitalism in a Global Society: Values, Identities, and Politics”. The conference is jointly organized by the Institute of Social Sciences from Belgrade and the Center for Empirical Research on Religion from Novi Sad.

The conference will be held at Villa Dinčić on Silver Lake, from September 4 to 5, 2026. The working languages of the conference are English and Russian.

Thematically, the conference is divided into 7 key areas:

  1. Theoretical and methodological frameworks for studying the relationship between religion and capitalism;
  2. Religion, consumer culture, and commodification: between adaptation and resistance;
  3. Religion, economy, and concepts of social justice;
  4. Religion between legitimation and resistance: structural violence in capitalism;
  5. Religion and capitalism in post-socialist societies: specificities and challenges;
  6. Individual and collective religiosity in late capitalism and post-socialism (confessionalism, beliefs, and ritual practices);
  7. Religion, ethics, and values in neoliberal societies.

Authors may submit their abstracts (300 to 500 words) in English or Russian, with a mandatory indication of the thematic unit for which they are applying. Abstracts can be sent until April 1, 2026, to the following email addresses:

djstankovic@idn.org.rs
vkosevic@idn.org.rs

The results of the abstract review will be delivered to the authors by April 15, 2026. Authors whose abstracts are accepted are required to confirm their participation in the scientific conference by August 1, 2026.

All accepted abstracts will be published in a book of abstracts in the working languages of the conference (English and Russian). The book of abstracts will be available in electronic and printed editions.
