Prof. dr Cecilia Reynaud from Dipartimento di Scienze Politiche, Università degli Studi Roma Tre, Rome (Italy) and dr Enrico Tucci, Senior Researcher from Instituto Nazionale di Statistica (ISTAT), Rome (Italy), were visiting the Demographic Research Centre of the Institute of Social Sciences between 13 and 25 October 2021.
The main topic of this visit was discussing recent research of depopulation in Italy and Serbia, and possible future cooperation in researching this issue. The depopulation is ranked very high among the current priorities of the Government of Serbia, which is also recognized by relevant international institutions supporting the research of this phenomena in our country, such as the United Nations Development Programme.
Our guests were discussing various aspects of the depopulation issue with dr Vladimir Nikitović, Principal Research Fellow from the Demographic Research Centre, based on the insights gained from the international projects that both sides have been recently participated in. They have come to an agreement about common interest to further explore this topic, by exchanging research experiences and improving knowledge about the causes and effects of depopulation, ageing and migration through different forms of international collaboration, such as research visits and joint applications to international projects.
In order to further develop cooperation with relevant national institutions in the field of demography, particularly with respect to depopulation and migration issues, colleague Nikitović and guests from Italy held a working meeting with representatives of the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia, led by Mrs. Gordana Bjelobrk, the Head of the Demography division, on improving the international migration statistics in Serbia, bearing in mind the experience of the Italian National Institute of Statistics.
