The Institute of Social Sciences develops the scientific, technological and organisational capacities and human resources as a basis in managing and implementing research and widening of scientific influence within the national, regional and European scientific space.
The aim of the Institute is to achieve the highest goals in science and thus justify the acquired status of an institute of national importance, which realises the basic and applied research based on excellence and competitiveness, including comprehensive development of international cooperation and attaining results which would contribute to the development of the total sum of theoretical and methodological knowledge, but also of the decision-making based on facts, critical thinking and general development of the society.
The fundamental interests of the ISS include nurturing the next generation of researchers and involvement of young scientists in the research and work of the Institute. In line with the ISS Agenda 2021–2031, special attention has been dedicated to the development of young researchers’ competences of participating in basic, as well as basic focused research projects.
The fundamental mission of the Institute of Social Sciences is:
- Harmonisation of organisation and implementation of scientific research work with the national and international standards,
- Implementation of contemporary technological standards in the ISS’ operation,
- Strengthening of the ISS as the leading national scientific research organisation in the field of social sciences, and
- Integrating the ISS in the European research space.
The scientific research programme of the Institute of Social sciences is harmonised with the Strategy of the Scientific and Technological Development of the Republic of Serbia “The Power of Knowledge”, as well as with the present HR, scientific and organisational circumstances in the Institute.
The freedom of scientific research, the highest ethical standards, critical thinking and inclusion of young researchers in the research and science in general, are among the key development principles in the ISS’ operation.
Securing a high-quality infrastructure and conditions for work, intense publishing activity, accelerated development of the quality of the ISS scientific journals, organisation of scientific conferences and presentation of their results in state-of-the-art formats, as well as digitalisation of the library resources and respect for the principles of open science would all contribute to the widening of the influence of social sciences in public.
Since 2021, the Institute has been a member of the European Alliance for Social Sciences and Humanities with the full status in the General Assembly of this association which gathers institutes and faculties with scientifically renowned results (excellence) in social sciences and humanities.
Since 2017, the Institute has been coordinating the work of the Academic Network for Cooperation in Southeast Europe which gathers institutes and faculties from the region. The ANCSEE is one of the pillars for strengthening of scientific cooperation and widening of scientific influence and exchange in the region.
