International Scientific Conference “Population in Post-Yugoslav Countries: (Dis)similarities and Perspectives”

The International Scientific Conference was held in Belgrade on April 19th and 20th, 2024. Hosted by the Association of Demographers of Serbia in partnership with the Institute of Social Sciences and the Faculty of Geography at the University of Belgrade, this premier event assembled experts and researchers from eight countries to discuss demographic trends and challenges. The conference, featuring 50 abstracts by 74 authors from different disciplines, highlighted the interdisciplinary nature of demographic research and its significance across various societal issues.

Participants examined the demographic shifts resulting from the post-Yugoslav transitions, focusing on population aging, fertility trends, mortality rates, migration patterns, and ethnic demographics. Each of the six sessions, moderated by leading scholars from the organizing institutions, encouraged interesting discussions on the similarities and differences in population dynamics among the successor states and their implications for future policy and research.

This conference, marking a first significant demographic scholarly gathering in Belgrade post-pandemic, offered a valuable opportunity for networking and collaboration. It provided a platform for sharing innovative research and approaches to demographic challenges, reinforcing the role of demographic studies in addressing critical social issues. Thanks to all the contributors and attendees, the event fostered a deeper understanding of the region’s demographic landscape and set the stage for future endeavors in demographic research.
