Dr. Zorica Mršević, principal research fellow at the Institute of Social Sciences participated in a panel held at the Kragujevac City Assembly on 4 July 2017, where the report by Aurelija Đan, “One Step Forward, Two Steps Back – The Role of the Police and Strengthening the Mechanisms of Protection from Crimes of Homophobia and Transphobia.” Dr Mršević’s presentation, “Liaison Officers with the LGBT Community”, emphasised this positive step taken by the police towards decreasing homophobia and homophobic violence in society. According to the data of the “Da se zna” association, 72% of the LGBT population in Serbia is exposed to psychological violence, threats and verbal abuse on account of their sexual orientation or gender identity, while 26% have suffered physical violence, which requires preventative action by institutions and expansion of the liaison officers network. The panel in Kragujevac also emphasised the need to adopt an action plan for implementing the Police in the Community Strategy and to increase the transparency of liaison officers and their jurisdiction to make them more accessible to the LGBT population.
